The President of the Botswana Football Association (BFA), Mr Tariq Babitseng, yesterday morning paid a courtesy call on the newly appointed Chief Executive Officer of the Botswana National Sport Commission (BNSC), Mr Olebile Sikwane. The meeting marked a key step toward enhancing collaboration between the two institutions and advancing the development of football in Botswana. Discussions focused on aligning strategies to strengthen football at both grassroots and professional levels. The leaders also explored opportunities to expand the sport’s reach and impact across the country.
Mr Babitseng emphasized the importance of commercializing football, improving infrastructure, and accelerating marketing and digital transformation within the sport. He highlighted the need for continued engagement with BNSC and the Ministry of Sport and Arts Botswana (MoSA) to unlock opportunities that position sport as a driver of national development in line with government priorities. The BFA President pledged full support to BNSC and committed to engaging FIFA and CAF to bring football development closer to communities nationwide. This approach aims to ensure that football contributes meaningfully to national growth and community engagement.
During the meeting, Mr Babitseng congratulated Mr Sikwane on his appointment and acknowledged him as a product of BFA. He praised Minister of Sport and Arts, Jacob Kelebeng, for his proactive leadership, accessibility, and continuous support for football and broader sports initiatives, including recent engagements with CAF in Morocco. He also extended appreciation to Makuke Stephen Makuke, Director of Business Development and Property Management at BNSC, for his leadership and guidance during his tenure as Acting CEO. These acknowledgments highlighted the importance of teamwork and support in advancing sports development.
Mr Sikwane warmly welcomed the BFA President and reaffirmed BNSC’s commitment to working closely with BFA to promote football development across Botswana. Both leaders agreed that coordinated efforts would strengthen grassroots programs, improve facilities, and enhance the overall growth and competitiveness of football in the country. They also committed to prioritizing programs that support young talent and increase community engagement in football. The collaboration is expected to drive strategic initiatives that benefit players, schools, and local clubs while aligning with national sports objectives.
The meeting underscored a shared vision to use football as a unifying force and a platform for national development. Enhanced cooperation between BFA and BNSC will enable better resource utilization, improved training programs, and the expansion of digital platforms to increase visibility and engagement. By working together, both institutions aim to create sustainable pathways for talent development and foster a culture of excellence across all levels of football. This initiative is set to strengthen Botswana’s position in regional and international football while empowering communities through sports.
