On 03 January 2026, Botswana marked a key milestone in the development of its National Security Strategy as the Development Team briefed the newly appointed Chairperson of the National Security Strategy Steering Committee, General Mpho Mophuting, on progress achieved to date. The briefing highlighted the ongoing efforts to produce a comprehensive and forward-looking strategy capable of addressing current and emerging security challenges. This engagement reflects the government’s commitment to strengthening national security frameworks through structured planning and stakeholder collaboration.
During the briefing, Ambassador Maribe, Chairperson of the Technical Committee, provided an overview of the Strategy development process, which began in May 2025. He explained that consultations with key stakeholders have progressed significantly, with the majority already completed. A Zero Draft of the Strategy has been produced, providing a foundation for further refinement. Consultations with the remaining stakeholders are ongoing, ensuring that diverse perspectives are incorporated into the final document. This phased approach aims to create a Strategy that is inclusive, evidence-based, and aligned with Botswana’s security priorities.
General Mophuting expressed his appreciation to the Development Team for their dedication and hard work throughout the process. He emphasised the importance of adhering to agreed timelines to guarantee the timely completion of the Strategy. “I am grateful for your efforts and wish to urge you to follow your timelines in order to complete this process as per the agreed deadline,” he stated. His remarks underscored the value of accountability and discipline in achieving a robust national security framework.
The briefing comes after the retirement of Lieutenant General Placid Segoko and marks the beginning of a new phase under General Mophuting’s leadership. This transition reflects continuity in Botswana’s strategic security planning while introducing fresh perspectives to guide the finalisation of the Strategy. The development process is designed to balance operational effectiveness with long-term resilience, ensuring that national security priorities remain responsive to evolving threats.
The National Security Strategy is positioned to serve as a cornerstone for Botswana’s security planning, providing a structured framework for policy, operational coordination, and resource allocation. By engaging technical experts, stakeholders, and leadership at multiple levels, Botswana aims to finalise a Strategy that is not only comprehensive but also actionable. This initiative reinforces the country’s commitment to safeguarding its citizens and maintaining stability in an increasingly complex security environment.
