Delegates from Botswana and Mozambique gathered in a spirit of unity and remembrance to celebrate Mozambique’s golden jubilee of independence on June 25, 2025. The milestone marked 50 years since Mozambique broke free from Portuguese colonial rule, a momentous occasion filled with reflection on the country’s journey to freedom and its achievements over the decades.

The event was graced by Botswana’s Assistant Minister for State President, Hon. Maipelo Mophuting, who delivered a heartfelt keynote address. She congratulated the government and people of Mozambique for reaching this significant milestone, emphasizing the importance of peace, resilience, and solidarity that has defined the nation’s path since 1975.

Hon. Mophuting paid tribute to the late Samora Machel, Mozambique’s first President and a key figure in the country’s liberation struggle. She highlighted his legacy as a courageous leader who led Mozambique through an intense armed struggle against colonial rule. His leadership not only secured Mozambique’s independence but also set the foundation for the nation’s development and regional cooperation in the years that followed.

Reflecting on the deep-rooted historical ties between Botswana and Mozambique, Mophuting spoke about the Samora Machel Museum located in Lobatse, Botswana. The museum stands as a symbol of Botswana’s role during Mozambique’s struggle for freedom, serving as a place of refuge for many Mozambicans who fled conflict. Botswana’s gesture of solidarity during that period continues to be remembered with gratitude by both nations.

“Today, 25 June 2025, marks a celebration of solidarity, freedom, and peace for the victorious nation,” said Hon. Mophuting, underscoring the enduring friendship between the two countries.

The golden jubilee celebrations offered an opportunity for both nations to reflect on their shared history, honor the sacrifices made during the fight for independence, and strengthen their commitment to regional cooperation and peace-building efforts in Southern Africa.
