President Advocate Duma Gideon Boko of Botswana and President Hakainde Hichilema of Zambia will jointly officiate the launch of the Kazungula Bridge Authority in Chobe. The official ceremony is scheduled for Tuesday, 24 February 2026, at Kazungula Landing Bay. The event marks a significant milestone in strengthening cross border cooperation and infrastructure management between the two neighboring countries. It also reinforces the strategic importance of the Kazungula Bridge as a key trade and transport corridor in the Southern African region.

The establishment of the Kazungula Bridge Authority formalizes the joint management structure of the bridge and its associated facilities. The authority will oversee operations, maintenance, and long term sustainability of the bridge infrastructure. This structure ensures coordinated governance and efficient service delivery for transporters, traders, and travelers who rely on the route. By creating a dedicated authority, Botswana and Zambia aim to maximize the economic benefits generated by the bridge.

Located in the Chobe District at the Botswana Zambia border, the Kazungula Bridge connects the two countries across the Zambezi River. The bridge plays a critical role in facilitating regional trade by linking major transport corridors that connect Southern and Central Africa. It reduces transit time for cargo movement and eases congestion that previously affected ferry based crossings. For businesses, the bridge lowers logistics costs and improves supply chain efficiency, strengthening regional competitiveness.

The joint launch by the two Heads of State highlights the strong diplomatic and economic ties between Botswana and Zambia. President Boko and President Hichilema are expected to emphasize the importance of regional integration, infrastructure development, and trade facilitation during the ceremony. The Kazungula Bridge Authority will serve as a model for cross border infrastructure governance in Africa. Its establishment signals a shared commitment to cooperation, accountability, and sustainable development.

The launch at Kazungula Landing Bay will attract government officials, regional stakeholders, and development partners. The event underscores the role of strategic infrastructure in driving economic growth, job creation, and regional connectivity. With the operationalization of the authority, Botswana and Zambia move closer to unlocking the full value of the Kazungula Bridge. This milestone strengthens the foundation for deeper economic collaboration and long term prosperity in the region.
