Botswana presented its mining sector to the world yesterday during its first-ever country showcase at the Mining Indaba, a leading global event for mining stakeholders. The showcase offered a platform for Botswana to promote investment opportunities and highlight its exploration potential. Headlined by Minister of Minerals and Energy, Hon. Bogolo Joy Kenewendo, the event emphasized Botswana’s strategic position as a stable and resource-rich investment destination. The programme attracted international mining executives, investors, and policy makers interested in tapping into Botswana’s mineral wealth. Participants gained insight into the country’s regulatory framework, investment incentives, and ongoing exploration projects.

The presentation on Botswana’s exploration landscape was delivered by Olefile Cisco Mashabila, Chief Executive Officer of the Botswana Geoscience Institute. He outlined key areas for mineral exploration, including diamonds, copper, nickel, and rare earth elements, highlighting Botswana’s geological potential. Mashabila also detailed government policies designed to attract both local and international investors, including transparent licensing procedures and streamlined approvals. Investors were encouraged to engage directly with geoscience institutions to identify high-potential sites and reduce exploration risks. Botswana’s commitment to fostering a predictable and investor-friendly environment was a central theme.

A testimonial from Jamie Caratti showcased Botswana’s strong jurisdictional credentials through Sandfire Mining’s success story. The case study emphasized Botswana’s stable governance, adherence to mining regulations, and supportive local frameworks that enabled Sandfire to achieve operational success. The example illustrated how international companies can thrive while contributing to local economic growth and employment. Caratti’s testimony reinforced the message that Botswana combines geological potential with political and regulatory reliability.

Minister Kenewendo joined Al Cook, CEO of De Beers Group, in a fireside chat titled “Conversation on the Value of Opportunities and How They Can Be Leveraged to Optimise Mutual Benefits.” The discussion explored how strategic partnerships can enhance mineral development while creating shared value for investors and communities. Topics included sustainable mining practices, corporate social responsibility, and innovative approaches to resource management. The dialogue underscored Botswana’s willingness to engage with global stakeholders in mutually beneficial collaborations.

The Mining Indaba showcase positioned Botswana as a compelling destination for mining investment and exploration. By highlighting its geological wealth, stable regulatory environment, and successful industry partnerships, the country demonstrated readiness to expand its mining sector while attracting international capital. The event marked a significant step in boosting Botswana’s visibility on the global mining stage and strengthening its reputation as a reliable partner for long-term investment.
