Botswana has made history by being awarded the hosting rights for the 2026 World Athletics Relays, set to take place on May 2–3, 2026, in Gaborone. This will mark the first time the country hosts a World Athletics Series event, solidifying Botswana’s growing reputation as a key player on the international athletics stage.
The announcement was made by the World Athletics Council, with Botswana Athletics Association (BAA) now tasked with delivering a world-class event. Professor Martin Mokgwathi has been appointed as chairperson of the Local Organising Committee (LOC), taking charge of preparations for what is expected to be a landmark moment in Botswana’s sporting history.
In a recent interview, BAA Vice President-Administration Kenneth Kikwe confirmed that preparations are already gathering momentum. To streamline operations ahead of the event, the BAA board has implemented leadership changes. BAA President Moses Bantsi has been appointed as the CEO of the Local Organising Committee, while Oabona Theetso, also Vice President-Administration, will serve as Acting BAA President until after the relays.
“The changes will remain in place until the completion of the World Athletics Relays. After delivering the event, Bantsi will resume his role as BAA President,” Kikwe explained.
However, concerns have surfaced among BAA affiliates regarding communication and transparency about key appointments and preparations. A source close to the matter revealed that affiliates raised concerns at the last Annual General Meeting (AGM) over the lack of information being shared from the BAA office.
“There has been no formal communication regarding the LOC membership or their qualifications. Affiliates feel sidelined from an event that should represent the collective achievement of Botswana athletics,” the source said. Additional concerns were raised over a benchmarking trip to Guangzhou, China, where it is alleged that no representatives from local athletics clubs were included.
Despite the internal concerns, excitement remains high across Botswana’s sporting community. Hosting the World Athletics Relays is seen as a major opportunity to showcase the country’s capabilities in hosting international events and to inspire the next generation of athletes.
As the countdown to May 2026 begins, all eyes will be on Gaborone to deliver a memorable event that reflects Botswana’s passion for athletics and its growing stature on the world sports map.
