The 4th Vunani Annual Botswana Women Sports Awards has seen an unprecedented level of interest this year, with the adjudication team receiving over 60 submissions. This marks the highest number of entries in the event’s history, reflecting growing engagement from the country’s sporting community. Kesego Kebelaele-Okie, director of BW Women Sports, highlighted that the adjudication committee was actively reviewing all submissions to finalise the nominees. The awards feature 17 categories, four of which are specifically within the CEO’s awards segment, while the remaining 13 categories collectively received more than 60 entries. This surge underscores the commitment of athletes, administrators, and national sport associations in submitting high-quality entries that reflect excellence in women’s sport.

Kebelaele-Okie attributed this increase to strong collaboration with stakeholders who have played a key role in ensuring submissions meet the awards’ standards. Athletes, sports administrators, and associations across Botswana have contributed significantly, raising the profile of the awards and ensuring a competitive selection process. The focus on quality submissions is expected to create a robust pool of nominees, representing diverse sporting disciplines and achievements. Organisers also emphasised that this year’s awards carry additional significance as Botswana celebrates its 60th Independence anniversary. The event is poised to be a milestone in recognising women who have not only excelled in sport but have also contributed to shaping the country’s sporting heritage.

The 2026 awards ceremony, scheduled for March 27, will follow the theme: Honouring Women, Shaping Botswana’s Sporting Legacy. This theme was carefully chosen to align with the nation’s Independence celebrations, highlighting the role of women in advancing sport and national pride. By connecting women’s sporting achievements to the broader narrative of national development, the awards aim to inspire future generations of female athletes. The theme reinforces the importance of acknowledging contributions that extend beyond the field, celebrating leadership, innovation, and perseverance in sports administration and community engagement. It also reflects the broader goal of positioning women as central figures in Botswana’s evolving sporting landscape.

As preparations continue, the adjudication team is focused on finalising the list of nominees who will compete across the 17 categories. The high volume of submissions is expected to intensify competition, ensuring that only the most outstanding performances and contributions are recognised. Stakeholders anticipate that the awards will spotlight emerging talents as well as seasoned athletes who have consistently delivered excellence. The recognition extends beyond individual achievement, highlighting collaborative efforts that enhance women’s sport across the country. This year’s awards are expected to set a new benchmark for quality and impact, establishing a model for future editions of the Vunani Annual Botswana Women Sports Awards.

The 2026 ceremony promises to be a landmark event, reflecting both sporting excellence and national pride. With record submissions, a carefully curated theme, and active stakeholder engagement, the awards are positioned to celebrate women who have shaped Botswana’s sporting legacy. The event will not only honour individual achievements but also reinforce the role of sport in national identity and social development. As the nominees are finalised, attention turns to the March 27 event, which is expected to bring together the country’s top athletes, administrators, and sports enthusiasts. By honouring women in sport, the awards continue to inspire participation, leadership, and a lasting impact on Botswana’s sporting future.
