Choppies Enterprises Limited has entered into a strategic partnership with the Ministry of Labour and Home Affairs through the signing of a one-year Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) aimed at enhancing Botswana’s National Internship Programme, as well as advancing a comprehensive training and localisation plan.

The landmark agreement, signed this week, will see Choppies absorb more than 150 graduates into its operations, providing them with hands-on industry experience and professional development opportunities. The initiative is designed to boost local human capital by equipping young professionals with the practical skills required to thrive in the competitive job market.

Speaking at the signing ceremony, representatives from both Choppies and the Ministry underscored the importance of public-private partnerships in addressing youth unemployment and bridging the gap between academic qualifications and real-world experience.

In addition to local placements, the MoU introduces a cross-border dimension to the internship programme. Beneficiaries will have the opportunity to intern at Choppies branches in Zambia and Namibia, allowing them to gain regional exposure and experience diverse work environments. This aspect of the programme is seen as a strategic export of local talent and a catalyst for regional skills transfer.

“This collaboration is not just about internships—it’s about shaping Botswana’s future workforce,” said a Choppies spokesperson. “By investing in local graduates, and offering them international exposure, we are building capacity that benefits not only our business but the country at large.”

The Ministry of Labour and Home Affairs echoed this sentiment, commending Choppies for its commitment to supporting government efforts to upskill young people and promote localisation in the private sector. The Ministry also confirmed that the initiative is aligned with national development goals that focus on job creation, skills development, and industrial growth.

Under the localisation component of the MoU, Choppies will implement targeted training programmes to ensure that Batswana are equipped to take on key roles within the company over time. This includes structured mentorship, career development planning, and technical training tailored to the retail and supply chain sectors.

The partnership is expected to serve as a model for other private sector players, demonstrating how business and government can collaborate to unlock youth potential and drive sustainable economic growth.

As the first cohort of interns prepares to begin their journey, the MoU stands as a bold step towards a future where young talent is nurtured, empowered, and positioned to lead both at home and across borders.
