Debswana’s Old General Manager’s Charity Walk campaign officially kicked off last Saturday in Gaborone with a lively activation event that drew hundreds of enthusiastic participants. Under the theme “Walk For Water,” the event highlighted the urgent need for improved water access in Botswana’s remote communities.

Held as a warm-up and awareness drive ahead of the main charity walk scheduled for August in the diamond mining town of Orapa, the activation attracted residents from across the city. Participants laced up their sneakers and took part in 5km, 10km, and 21km race categories, making the morning both active and meaningful.

The focus of this year’s campaign is addressing water scarcity in underserved areas—a cause that aligns closely with Debswana’s long-standing commitment to sustainable development and social investment across Botswana.

Speaking at the event, Marketing Lead for the walk, Lebogang Tebogo, stressed that the initiative goes far beyond physical fitness. “We’re not just walking or running today for fitness—we’re moving with purpose,” he said. “Each step we take today raises awareness about the critical need for reliable water supply in Botswana’s remote regions.”

Saturday’s activation was more than just a race. The event featured a vibrant mix of aerobics sessions, live musical performances, educational stalls, and community outreach activities. The atmosphere was filled with energy, fun, and a shared sense of responsibility towards improving the lives of fellow citizens.

Organisers expressed satisfaction with the turnout and community spirit, noting that the strong participation bodes well for the upcoming main event in Orapa. “The energy here today shows that the public is ready to support this important cause,” said one of the event coordinators.

As the countdown to the August walk continues, Debswana and its partners hope to rally even greater support, raising both awareness and funds to bring sustainable water solutions to the communities that need them most.
