Yesterday morning, Her Excellency Valérie Baraban, Ambassador of France to Botswana and Special Representative to SADC, led a delegation from France in a courtesy call on Botswana’s Minister of Health, Hon. Dr. Stephen Modise. The meeting was held in preparation for the upcoming One Health Summit, scheduled to take place in France in April. The engagement provided an opportunity for both parties to discuss shared priorities and explore areas of collaboration to strengthen Botswana’s health system. Officials emphasized the importance of building sustainable partnerships that address both immediate health challenges and long-term system development. The visit underscores France’s commitment to supporting regional health initiatives and Botswana’s efforts to advance public health outcomes.

During the discussions, the delegation and Minister Modise exchanged views on the current needs and priorities of Botswana’s health sector. Key topics included the development of a National Health Insurance framework aimed at improving access to healthcare services for all citizens. Participants also focused on maternal health, recognizing the importance of reducing maternal and infant mortality rates through targeted interventions. Revitalization of Primary Health Care emerged as a central theme, with both parties exploring strategies to strengthen community-level services and ensure timely access to essential care.

The meeting further addressed critical gaps in medicines, equipment, and medical commodities. Both sides acknowledged the importance of ensuring that health facilities are well-equipped to meet the growing needs of the population. Discussions highlighted opportunities for technical assistance, resource mobilization, and knowledge exchange to support Botswana’s health infrastructure. Ambassador Baraban emphasized France’s willingness to collaborate on initiatives that enhance health service delivery and promote regional health security.

The engagement reinforced the significance of international partnerships in advancing national health priorities. By sharing expertise, resources, and best practices, Botswana and France aim to create sustainable solutions that strengthen healthcare systems, improve service delivery, and promote equitable access to care. The One Health Summit is expected to further these discussions, providing a platform for Botswana to present its health strategies and engage with global stakeholders on collaborative approaches.

The courtesy call reflects Botswana’s commitment to proactive health diplomacy and its focus on aligning national health initiatives with global standards. Strengthened partnerships, such as the one with France, are expected to accelerate the development of policies, frameworks, and programs that address critical health challenges. As the country prepares for the One Health Summit, these engagements position Botswana to leverage international expertise and support for the benefit of its population and the broader Southern African region.
