The Botswana Bowling Association held its elective annual general meeting at the Gaborone Club on Thursday, where Marea Modutlwa was officially appointed as the new association president. Modutlwa outlined youth development as a key strategic priority, highlighting the importance of nurturing young talent to ensure the long-term growth of bowling in Botswana. She stressed the need for structured support programs, coaching, and opportunities for emerging bowlers to compete at higher levels. Additionally, Modutlwa called on the private sector to partner with the association and provide sponsorship, noting that collaborations could help fund tournaments, training programs, and infrastructure development. She further announced plans to hold a strategic retreat aimed at aligning the association’s goals with the new Botswana National Olympic Committee (BNOC) strategy, ensuring a coordinated approach to sports development.

Outgoing president Kitso Robert reflected on his tenure and emphasized the need for constitutional amendments within the association. He proposed that a strategy meeting be held before April 2026 to review governance structures, rules, and operational procedures. Robert also acknowledged the rise in youth participation in tournaments, noting that increased engagement from younger bowlers presents an opportunity to grow the sport nationwide. He encouraged delegates to thoroughly understand the association’s rules to maintain proper governance and ensure consistent management of events and activities. Robert’s guidance highlighted the importance of clear policies and structured oversight in sustaining the sport’s growth.

The Botswana Bowling Association is now poised to strengthen its youth programs and build stronger partnerships under Modutlwa’s leadership. Her focus on private sector collaboration is expected to attract sponsorship, improve facilities, and expand the sport’s reach. The upcoming strategic retreat will provide a platform for stakeholders to review current programs, identify gaps, and align initiatives with national sports objectives. By prioritizing youth development and governance reforms, the association aims to create a sustainable structure that supports competitive bowling at all levels.

Modutlwa’s presidency signals a renewed commitment to modernising the association and expanding its impact. With both administrative reforms and targeted development programs, bowling in Botswana is positioned for growth and increased visibility. The association plans to roll out initiatives that engage young players, improve coaching standards, and encourage participation across the country. Through these efforts, Botswana Bowling Association aims to raise the profile of the sport, attract talent, and strengthen its presence on the national and regional stage.

The transition in leadership reflects a balance of continuity and innovation, with Modutlwa building on the foundation laid by Robert while introducing new strategies to enhance development. By combining governance improvements, youth engagement, and private sector partnerships, the association is preparing to advance the sport in a structured and sustainable manner. Stakeholders, including players, sponsors, and sports enthusiasts, are expected to play a key role in supporting these initiatives and ensuring bowling remains a vibrant and growing sport in Botswana.
