The Minister of Minerals and Energy Bogolo Joy Kenewendo met residents of Mahalapye yesterday to address concerns about sand mining licensing. Her visit followed a stop in Ikongwe. Mahalapye is known for high quality sand and many community members want to access and benefit from the resource.
The Minister told the gathering that sand mining licences remain open. She noted that restrictions are in place to protect the environment and ensure sustainable use. She encouraged residents to look at wider opportunities in the mining sector. She explained that the Amended Mines and Minerals Act gives Batswana better chances to participate and benefit from mineral resources.
She shared updates from recent meetings with mining companies. These companies have signed MOUs that show commitment to supporting value chain development. She said such partnerships help empower Batswana and support national economic diversification.
The Members of Parliament for Mahalapye West and Mahalapye East David Tshere and Augustin Nyatanga welcomed her visit. They thanked her for addressing issues that affect their communities. They said her explanations on policy matters gave residents confidence and clarity.
