Paramount Chief of Balete, Kgosi Mosadi Seboko, has cautioned residents of Taung, particularly the youth, about the risks associated with cohabitation. Speaking during a kgotla meeting yesterday, Kgosi Seboko highlighted that cohabitation has become common in the area, but often leads to serious social and emotional consequences.
She noted that relationships without formal commitment can escalate into extreme situations, including domestic violence, homicide, or even suicide, when partners decide to end the relationship. The Chief stressed that the absence of formal support structures leaves individuals vulnerable during conflicts.
Kgosi Seboko encouraged couples who wish to remain together to formalize their relationships through marriage. She pointed out that married couples typically benefit from stronger support systems, including family guidance, community oversight, and legal protections, which can help them navigate challenges more effectively.
The Chief’s message underscores the importance of responsible relationship practices and the role of traditional leadership in promoting social stability. By advocating for marriage, Kgosi Seboko aims to reduce the risks associated with cohabitation and strengthen family structures in the Taung community.
