The World Organisation for Animal Health (WOAH) is currently hosting a regional training seminar for Intergovernmental Focal Persons for Veterinary Laboratories, bringing together delegates from across Southern Africa with a shared mission: to strengthen animal health systems and elevate veterinary laboratory standards.

Held in Botswana, the seminar has drawn participation from veterinary and agricultural professionals, technical experts, and national representatives—all working collaboratively to enhance the quality and effectiveness of veterinary diagnostics and disease surveillance in the region.

Officiating the seminar, Acting Minister of Lands and Agriculture, Dr. Edwin Dikoloti, praised the commitment demonstrated by participating nations and stakeholders. He highlighted the importance of international cooperation in maintaining high standards in animal health, noting that such efforts are essential to preventing disease outbreaks and promoting sustainable agricultural practices.

“This seminar is not just about sharing knowledge—it is about building lasting capacity in the veterinary field,” said Dr. Dikoloti. “Strong veterinary services are vital to food security, economic growth, and the well-being of our rural communities. Agriculture remains at the heart of our society, and by strengthening this sector, we are investing directly in our national development.”

Dr. Dikoloti also acknowledged the role of veterinary laboratories in safeguarding animal welfare and supporting trade through disease control mechanisms that align with global standards. He emphasized that building resilient animal health systems is a crucial step toward improving livestock productivity, public health, and regional biosecurity.

The seminar provides a valuable platform for technical training, knowledge exchange, and the promotion of best practices in veterinary laboratory management. Participants are engaging in discussions on cutting-edge diagnostic tools, laboratory quality assurance, and coordinated disease response strategies that can be adapted to country-specific needs.

With support from regional experts and national focal points, the seminar represents a significant step toward more robust and responsive animal health infrastructure in Southern Africa. As the world faces growing threats from zoonotic diseases and climate-related challenges, the importance of a united, well-trained veterinary network has never been greater.

Through initiatives like this, WOAH continues to play a leading role in promoting international collaboration, advancing veterinary science, and supporting countries in building sustainable, science-based animal health systems that benefit both people and animals alike.
