Botswana’s national football team, the Zebras, face Mozambique’s Mambas this afternoon in a crucial 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifier. The match, scheduled for 3pm at Estádio do Zimpeto in Maputo, offers the Zebras a chance to secure victory and boost their chances of finishing second in Group G.
The Zebras are coming off a 3-1 defeat to Algeria last week and will face a tough challenge, having previously lost 3-2 to Mozambique at the Obed Itani Chilume Stadium in Francistown. Despite the setbacks, Botswana showed improved cohesion, urgency, and tactical discipline against Algeria, signaling progress under head coach Morena Ramoreboli.
Ramoreboli stated that the team has prepared intensively for the encounter. He highlighted the need to counter Mozambique’s fast-paced, individualistic style of play. “We are going to try to work on that and be the best that we can be and I feel that this time we will get it right,” he said.
The coach also reflected on lessons from the Algeria match, noting positive aspects such as fluid, brave play and the team’s ability to deny opponents space. At the same time, he acknowledged areas requiring improvement to strengthen overall performance.
Botswana currently sits fifth in Group G with nine points. Algeria leads with 18 points, followed by Uganda and Mozambique on 12 points each. Guinea holds fourth place with 10 points, while Somalia is at the bottom with one point.
The Zebras’ clash with Mozambique is pivotal for their qualification ambitions. A win could revive their chances of securing second place in the group, while a loss would further complicate their path to the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
