President Advocate Duma Gideon Boko has embarked on a State Visit to Tallinn, Estonia, from 19th to 22nd May 2025, as part of efforts to deepen bilateral cooperation and explore new avenues for partnership between Botswana and Estonia. The visit marks a significant step in advancing diplomatic, economic, and technological relations between the two nations.
During the visit, President Boko will engage in high-level official talks with His Excellency Mr. Alar Karis, President of the Republic of Estonia. The discussions are expected to focus on key areas of mutual interest, including digital transformation and innovation, education and capacity building, trade, investment, and other strategic sectors.
The State Visit also provides a platform to assess progress made since President Alar Karis’s visit to Botswana in March 2024. The leaders are anticipated to review agreed outcomes and chart the way forward in enhancing cooperation.
A major highlight of the visit will be the official opening of the Botswana-Estonia Business Forum on 21st May 2025. Jointly officiated by President Boko and President Karis, the forum aims to promote trade, investment, and partnerships between businesses from both countries. Hosted by the Government of Estonia, the event will bring together business leaders, innovators, and policymakers to explore collaborative opportunities, particularly in technology and enterprise development.
Estonia, often hailed as the “Silicon Valley of Europe,” is renowned for its digital prowess and innovation-driven economy. With 99% of public services available online, a thriving tech start-up ecosystem, and global digital success stories like Skype, Bolt, and WISE, Estonia has become a benchmark for countries pursuing digital transformation.
Botswana, which is actively driving its own digital transformation agenda, stands to gain significantly from Estonia’s experience and expertise. The exchange of knowledge and collaboration in ICT, e-governance, and digital taxation is expected to support Botswana’s goal of becoming a digitally empowered economy.
Diplomatic ties between Botswana and Estonia were established in 2003, and the two countries continue to build on a foundation of shared values and mutual respect. This State Visit signals a renewed commitment to advancing strategic cooperation and building future-ready economies rooted in innovation, inclusivity, and sustainable growth.
As President Boko’s visit unfolds, it is anticipated to yield impactful outcomes that will benefit both nations, reinforcing Botswana’s position on the global stage as a forward-looking partner in the digital era.
