The Gaborone City Council (GCC) has officially unveiled its comprehensive City Development Plan for the years 2022 to 2046, setting the stage for a series of transformative urban projects aimed at enhancing infrastructure, mobility, and sustainability within the capital.

Presented during an Ordinary Full Council Session by GCC Consultant Ernest Keabaitse, the long-term strategy outlines a vision for a modern, inclusive, and environmentally friendly Gaborone. Among the most notable initiatives is the introduction of dedicated bicycle lanes throughout the city’s road networks.

The plan seeks to promote alternative modes of transportation, with cycling being a key focus. The proposed bicycle lanes are expected to improve road safety for cyclists, reduce traffic congestion, and contribute to a healthier, more active urban population. The move aligns with global trends encouraging green transport and urban resilience.

According to Keabaitse, the vision behind the development plan is to create a livable city that balances economic growth with quality of life for residents. In addition to bicycle lanes, the plan includes upgrades to road infrastructure, expanded public spaces, improved stormwater drainage, and more efficient public transportation systems.

The Gaborone City Development Plan 2022–2046 was crafted through extensive consultations with stakeholders, including urban planners, community members, environmental experts, and policymakers. The plan emphasizes sustainability, smart city technologies, and inclusive access to city services for all demographics.

City leaders believe the plan will serve as a blueprint to guide Gaborone’s urban expansion and address challenges such as rapid population growth, climate change, and urban sprawl.

With the unveiling of this forward-thinking plan, Gaborone is taking significant steps toward becoming a more dynamic, connected, and future-ready African capital.
