Member of Parliament for Good Hope/Mmathethe, Dr Edwin Dikoloti, has emphasized the vital role community sports events play in promoting both health and economic growth. Speaking during the prize-giving ceremony of the recent Dikoloti Classic Tournament, Dr Dikoloti underscored how such initiatives benefit residents, especially older adults, and support local businesses.
The tournament, exclusively for players aged 35 and above, offered a unique platform for senior citizens to remain physically active and socially engaged. Alongside competitive football matches involving various social clubs, the event also featured dog and horse races, adding excitement and variety to the sporting experience.
“This tournament offers a chance for our senior citizens to exercise and enjoy sports,” Dr Dikoloti stated, highlighting the importance of encouraging fitness and community participation among older residents.
Beyond health benefits, Dr Dikoloti drew attention to the positive economic impact of the tournament on the constituency. “Events like this stimulate local economies as vendors and small traders benefit from the influx of players and spectators across the constituency,” he explained. The gathering not only fostered community spirit but also created opportunities for entrepreneurs to showcase and sell their goods.
The Dikoloti Classic Tournament witnessed fierce competition, with Digawana Social Club claiming the championship title. The team received P10,000 along with gold medals for their outstanding performance. PV Monko secured second place, taking home P7,000 and silver medals.
By combining sports, health, and economic opportunities, events like the Dikoloti Classic Tournament demonstrate how community engagement can contribute to overall well-being and development within Good Hope/Mmathethe.
