The Media Task Team, which began consultations on 11 March 2025, has submitted its report and Draft Media Legislative Framework to the Minister for State President, Honourable Moeti Mohwasa.

Minister Mohwasa said the exercise aimed to liberate the media space and promote the sustainability of the media industry in Botswana. He confirmed that BTV, Radio Botswana, and Daily News will be transformed into public media outlets to ensure they become self-sustaining.

He noted that measures to support state media sustainability are already in place. The Daily News now publishes its online edition every day of the week and prints hard copies on Tuesdays and Fridays.

Task Team Chairperson Gideon Nkala thanked Minister Mohwasa for responding to calls from the media fraternity and the public for a media environment that fosters order, accuracy, ethics, and professionalism.

Nkala said the team’s main tasks were to review existing media laws, propose a framework aligned with Botswana’s international obligations, and conduct broad consultations. These included input from media practitioners, civil society, legal experts, and international organisations.

The submitted framework is expected to guide reforms aimed at improving media freedom, enhancing public access to information, and strengthening ethical standards in Botswana’s media sector.
