Speaker of the National Assembly Hon. Dithapelo Keorapetse has praised the Debswana Orapa Letlhakane and Damtshaa Mines (OLDM) for their continued commitment to social responsibility through the Annual General Manager Charity Walk.
Addressing participants this morning in Orapa at the 20th edition of the event, Hon. Keorapetse, who joined as a guest walker, said Parliament fully supports initiatives by organisations that mobilise resources for community upliftment. He highlighted that such partnerships play a key role in promoting social well-being, ensuring access to basic needs, and strengthening collective responsibility across communities.
This year’s walk was held under the theme “A walk for water,” focusing on one of the most pressing challenges faced by many households. Hon. Keorapetse stressed the importance of such efforts, noting that access to clean water is fundamental to improving livelihoods and supporting sustainable development.
General Manager of OLDM, Mogakolodi Maoketsa, said the 2025 walk aims to raise funds to address water shortages, particularly in the Boteti East constituency. He reiterated Debswana’s commitment to making life better for communities around its operations. According to him, the mining company will continue to direct its corporate social investment towards impactful projects that respond to urgent community needs.
The OLDM Charity Walk has become one of the most recognised corporate social responsibility events in Botswana, drawing participants from different sectors and consistently raising resources for community-driven initiatives. This year’s focus on water reflects the company’s strategy to align its efforts with pressing national development priorities.
Through sustained collaboration between government, business, and communities, events like the Debswana Charity Walk demonstrate how collective action can address critical social challenges. With water scarcity continuing to affect rural households, the funds raised are expected to make a measurable difference in improving access to this essential resource.
