Two young Batswana women, Barulaganyi Gaogane, a fashion designer, and Bengingazi Sibanda, a canvas tent and furniture specialist, are representing Botswana at the African Women Entrepreneurship Empowerment Project in Beijing, China. Both are beneficiaries of the Youth Development Fund (YDF), highlighting Botswana’s commitment to supporting young entrepreneurs on international platforms.

On the first day of the workshop, Gaogane and Sibanda shared strategies for growing and sustaining their businesses. They focused on diversifying funding sources, reducing reliance on a single financier, and building stronger teams by involving more people in daily operations. These approaches aim to create more resilient and scalable businesses capable of long-term success.

The duo highlighted the importance of redefining relationships between businesses and their communities. They noted that many clients come from within their own neighborhoods, making it crucial to strengthen ties and give back. By contributing positively to the community, entrepreneurs can foster loyalty and establish lasting customer relationships.

Another key discussion point was adapting to a rapidly changing business environment. Participants explored the potential of artificial intelligence (AI) to improve efficiency, innovation, and market reach. Gaogane and Sibanda reflected on ways to integrate AI into their operations, ensuring their businesses remain competitive in a technology-driven world.

Their participation in the workshop underscores Botswana’s growing presence in international entrepreneurship circles. By learning new strategies and sharing local insights, these young women are set to strengthen their businesses while inspiring other youth to pursue entrepreneurial opportunities.
