Assistant Minister of Health Hon. Lawrence Ookeditse has emphasized that Botswana’s upcoming National Health Insurance (NHI) must serve all citizens equally. Speaking at the National Health Insurance concept framing consultative workshop in Gaborone this morning, he said the NHI should focus on ensuring that every Motswana, regardless of location or income, has access to quality healthcare.
Ookeditse highlighted that the success of the NHI will depend on how well it addresses the nation’s core health needs. He said the system must be built on equity and sustainability, ensuring that no citizen is left behind because of financial or geographic barriers. According to the Assistant Minister, the vision is to create a unified framework that brings together both public and private healthcare resources for broader coverage.
The consultative workshop brought together senior officials from the Ministry of Health, hospital heads, private sector representatives, and experts from the World Health Organization (WHO) and the Botswana Institute for Development Policy Analysis (BIDPA). The meeting aims to shape the foundational concepts and structure of Botswana’s proposed NHI before it is formally implemented.
Participants discussed models for financing, healthcare access, and service delivery. They also reviewed how the NHI could strengthen existing systems and promote efficiency in resource use. Experts stressed the need for collaboration between the public and private sectors to ensure sustainable healthcare financing.
The Assistant Minister noted that Botswana can learn from regional and global examples where inclusive health insurance systems have improved access and outcomes. He said the government’s goal is to design a policy that guarantees affordability, quality, and reliability across all healthcare services.
The National Health Insurance initiative is part of Botswana’s broader strategy to achieve Universal Health Coverage (UHC). By prioritizing inclusivity and accountability, the Ministry aims to ensure that every citizen benefits from essential health services without facing financial hardship.
The outcomes from the workshop will guide further stakeholder engagements and inform the drafting of Botswana’s National Health Insurance framework in the coming months.
