After a strong performance in Stage One of the Dakar Rally 2026, Botswana’s Ross Branch was handed a six-minute penalty for speeding, dropping him from the provisional first position to seventh on the day. Branch had initially crossed the finish line as the stage winner, showcasing impressive speed and control in the challenging desert conditions.

The penalty was issued following an equipment analysis at the bivouac, confirming that Branch exceeded the allowed speed limits during the stage. This adjustment handed the Stage One victory to Spain’s Edgar Canet, who secured back-to-back wins after his prologue success. Australian rider Daniel Sanders claimed second place, while American Ricky Brabec finished third.

Speaking after the race, Branch remained positive despite the setback. He noted that the day had been productive and highlighted his improved pace compared to previous years. “I made a couple of small mistakes, I got lost a little bit, nothing too serious. I am happy that I have the speed. That was a big thing for me last year as I was not getting the results I wanted and I was getting frustrated,” Branch said.

Branch’s focus now shifts to the remaining stages of the Dakar Rally 2026, where consistency and careful navigation will be crucial for climbing back up the leaderboard. His performance demonstrates that he remains a strong contender in the rally, combining speed with growing confidence in the desert terrain.
