Tonota District Council has launched an urgent assessment to identify the immediate needs of families affected by heavy rainfall that hit Matsitama on Sunday afternoon. The downpour caused widespread damage, prompting swift action from local authorities to provide support and shelter to those impacted.
According to the district’s acting senior social welfare officer, Mr Basimane Mothoagae, 39 people have already been accommodated at Matsitama Primary School. He explained that several homes were damaged by the rainfall, leading the council to conduct house-to-house assessments to determine the full extent of the impact.
Kgosi Reuben Kethobogile of Matsitama confirmed that there were no fatalities reported. However, one individual sustained injuries when their house collapsed. The chief emphasized the importance of the council’s intervention in ensuring affected families receive immediate assistance and support.
Among the victims is Ms Barulanaye Basekilwe, a teacher at Matsitama Primary School. She reported the loss of her household items, including her television, couch, and other essential furniture. The damage has left her family in urgent need of relief and support from both the community and local authorities.
The Tonota District Council continues to coordinate relief efforts and monitor the situation closely. Authorities are calling for any assistance to help affected families recover from the sudden destruction caused by the torrential rainfall.
