Kanaku, a remote settlement, recently came alive with a thrilling horse race that united the community and drew visitors from surrounding areas. The event, organised by Kagiso Mopako, offered more than competition; it served as a celebration of local culture and tradition. Residents from the Bakgalagadi and Basarwa communities joined South African actors in cheering jockeys as they raced across the dusty tracks, creating a vibrant and inclusive atmosphere.
Mopako’s vision extends beyond the excitement of the race. He emphasised the potential for community growth, saying, “We want to uplift our communities, promote agro-tourism, and create opportunities for our people. These jockeys are talented, and we want to help them turn professional and earn a living from their skills.” The initiative highlights local talent while providing a platform for economic and cultural development.
Plans are underway to place Kanaku on the international calendar, signaling Mopako’s ambition to put the settlement on the global map. “We want the world to know about Kanaku and Mabutsane,” he added. The horse race is already gaining attention for its unique combination of sport, culture, and community empowerment, promising long-term benefits for the region.
By blending tradition, tourism, and talent development, Kanaku’s horse racing initiative is poised to become a key cultural attraction, showcasing the settlement’s spirit and potential to visitors from across the region and beyond.
