Botswana international Benson Kitso Mangolo has agreed to a mutual separation with Richards Bay after being deemed surplus to requirements at the KwaZulu-Natal club. The left back has since returned home and signed a six month permanent deal with Mochudi Centre Chiefs.
Centre Chiefs general manager Owe Mmolawa confirmed the move and clarified that the agreement is not a loan. Mangolo joins the Botswana Premier League side as they push for a strong finish to the season. Centre Chiefs currently sit fourth on the league standings at the halfway stage.
The 27 year old defender opted to leave Richards Bay following disagreements over a proposed loan move to Midlands Wanderers in the Motsepe Foundation Championship. Mangolo was on a one year contract with the Natal Rich Boyz after joining the club last year. The decision to part ways came after limited game time and stalled prospects at the club.
Mangolo made two competitive appearances for Richards Bay. His debut came in August last year against Chippa United, a match Richards Bay won 1 0. He later featured again against the same opponents in the last 16 of the Carling Knockout in October, where Richards Bay claimed a convincing 4 1 victory. Ironically, Mangolo had previously been linked with a move to Chippa United before signing for Richards Bay.
After October, Mangolo struggled for minutes and spent most of his time on the bench. That situation influenced his decision to seek a move that would offer regular football and a chance to revive his career. His return to Mochudi Centre Chiefs offers a fresh start. The club gains an experienced international defender with exposure to South African top flight football. For Mangolo, the move provides an opportunity to regain match fitness, confidence, and consistency ahead of future national team considerations.
As the Botswana Premier League season progresses, all eyes will be on how quickly Mangolo settles and the impact he makes at Centre Chiefs. The six month deal gives both player and club flexibility while setting the stage for a potential longer stay if performances meet expectations.
