The Vice President and Minister of Finance, Mr Ndaba Nkosinathi Gaolathe, has strengthened Botswana’s international development partnerships through a courtesy visit to the United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO). He was received in Vienna by Ms Fatou Haidara, Deputy to the Director General and Managing Director of UNIDO, where discussions centered on Botswana’s long-term industrialisation and economic transformation agenda. The engagement placed strong emphasis on practical pathways for boosting productivity, innovation and competitiveness in key sectors of the economy. It also highlighted Botswana’s commitment to shifting from resource dependence toward a more diversified and resilient industrial base. The meeting set a cooperative tone for future collaboration between Botswana and UNIDO in support of national development goals.
Ndaba Nkosinathi Gaolathe used the platform to explore how Botswana can better leverage international technical expertise to accelerate industrial development. Discussions focused on strengthening skills development systems, expanding investment promotion strategies and improving industrial competitiveness across value chains. A key theme was the role of innovation in supporting sustainable economic transformation, especially in manufacturing and agro-processing. The dialogue also explored how Botswana can benefit from UNIDO’s global experience in supporting countries undergoing structural economic change. Both sides agreed that targeted cooperation could help unlock new growth opportunities and improve industrial performance.
United Nations Industrial Development Organization outlined its “Approach for Africa,” which prioritises investment in people, stronger industrial productivity and deeper regional integration. The framework also focuses on sustainable energy solutions, climate action and innovative financing models that support long-term development. UNIDO stressed the importance of aligning national strategies with broader continental priorities, including the African Continental Free Trade Area. Fatou Haidara noted areas where Botswana could benefit from technical support, including industrial policy design and investment facilitation. Both parties identified clear overlap between Botswana’s development vision and UNIDO’s strategic priorities, creating a strong basis for cooperation.
The engagement concluded with agreement to establish a joint working team that will coordinate and advance the outcomes of the discussions. This team will focus on identifying priority projects, technical support mechanisms and implementation timelines that align with Botswana’s industrialisation agenda. UNIDO reaffirmed its commitment to supporting Botswana’s development objectives through tailored programmes and partnerships. The Vice President’s broader diplomatic mission also includes participation in the OPEC Fund 50th Anniversary and Development Forum 2026 before continuing to Cape Town for the 56th SACU Council of Ministers’ Meeting. The visit reflects Botswana’s active role in shaping regional and global economic cooperation frameworks focused on sustainable development and industrial growth.
