Minister of Environment and Tourism Wynter Boipuso Mmolotsi has urged stronger investment, innovation and collaboration to accelerate the development of Botswana’s tourism and hospitality industry. His remarks came during the official opening of the inaugural Francistown Hospitality Expo held last Friday, where stakeholders from across the sector gathered to discuss growth opportunities. The Minister described tourism as a key pillar for economic diversification and job creation in Botswana. He emphasized that the sector has the potential to reduce reliance on traditional industries while expanding opportunities for local communities. His address positioned tourism as a central driver of long term sustainable development.
During the Expo, the Minister highlighted that tourism success should not only be measured by the number of international visitors but also by its impact on livelihoods and local economies. He explained that meaningful growth must include environmental conservation, cultural preservation and inclusive participation of communities. According to his message, the industry must ensure that benefits reach ordinary citizens and not remain concentrated in limited areas. He noted that this approach strengthens resilience and ensures long term stability for the sector. His remarks reinforced a broader national vision focused on balanced and inclusive development.
The Minister also pointed out that the global tourism landscape is changing rapidly, requiring destinations to adapt through innovation and digital transformation. He encouraged operators in the hospitality sector to invest in modern technologies that improve service delivery and enhance visitor experiences. Quality standards, he said, must remain a priority as Botswana positions itself in an increasingly competitive international market. He further stressed that sustainability practices must be integrated into tourism planning and operations. These measures, he explained, will help Botswana remain relevant and attractive to global travellers.
A strong focus of the Minister’s speech was the protection of Botswana’s natural and cultural heritage, which he described as the foundation of the tourism industry. He warned that without responsible environmental stewardship, the long term success of tourism could be at risk. He encouraged stakeholders to prioritize conservation efforts while developing tourism infrastructure and services. Young people were also urged to take advantage of opportunities within tourism and hospitality, including entrepreneurship and skills development. His message highlighted the importance of empowering the next generation to play an active role in shaping the sector’s future.
The Francistown Hospitality Expo brought together government officials, investors, entrepreneurs and development partners to showcase tourism products and strengthen industry collaboration. Participants used the platform to explore new investment opportunities and build partnerships aimed at expanding Botswana’s tourism footprint. The event also served as a space for knowledge sharing and strategic dialogue on how to grow the sector sustainably. Discussions focused on improving competitiveness and aligning tourism development with global standards. The gathering reinforced the shared goal of building a resilient and globally competitive tourism industry for Botswana’s future growth.
