The Chairperson of the National Security Strategy Technical Committee, Ambassador Clifford Maribe, has underscored the critical role of Ambassadors in protecting Botswana’s national security. Speaking at the induction course for newly appointed Ambassadors and High Commissioner Designates at the Botswana Public Service College, Ambassador Maribe presented the Zero Draft of the National Security Strategy (NSS) and emphasized that diplomats are frontline security actors.

“You are the operational security actors and not peripheral diplomats. Daily diplomatic action directly shapes Botswana’s security and resilience,” Ambassador Maribe said. He highlighted that the decisions and actions of Botswana’s envoys abroad have a direct impact on the country’s external security environment. By integrating national security priorities into diplomatic activities, Ambassadors help safeguard the nation from emerging threats while enhancing Botswana’s resilience on the global stage.

The induction course provided a platform for newly appointed Ambassadors and High Commissioners to engage with the NSS and understand their expanded responsibilities. Participants welcomed the presentation, noting that the strategy has been long overdue. They acknowledged that the finalization and implementation of the NSS would strengthen Botswana’s capacity to respond to complex international challenges, including political instability, economic threats, and transnational security risks.

Ambassador Maribe’s presentation marks a significant milestone in aligning Botswana’s diplomatic corps with the country’s security objectives. By positioning Ambassadors as integral actors in national security, the government aims to create a proactive and coordinated approach that links foreign policy with strategic defense priorities. The NSS is expected to provide clear guidelines for diplomatic engagement, intelligence sharing, and international cooperation, ensuring that Botswana’s envoys contribute effectively to both regional and global security frameworks.

This initiative reflects Botswana’s commitment to modernizing its security architecture while enhancing the role of diplomacy in national defense. By embedding security awareness into diplomatic practice, the country strengthens its resilience against emerging threats and reinforces the importance of a unified approach to safeguarding national interests. The NSS will serve as a strategic blueprint to ensure that Botswana’s diplomatic efforts actively support its broader security and stability goals.
