President Boko met with United States Secretary of Commerce Howard William Lutnick yesterday on the sidelines of the 80th United Nations General Assembly (UNGA 80) to push forward negotiations on tariff relief for Botswana’s diamond exports.

As of mid-September, both parties had tentatively agreed to a provisional 15 percent effective tariff rate, down from the 37 percent duty on Botswana imports announced in April 2025. The meeting aimed to further advance discussions and solidify a framework for a long-term trade agreement.

President Boko emphasized the government’s commitment to securing a deal that could reduce tariffs even further, enhancing Botswana’s competitiveness in the US market. A successful agreement would significantly boost Botswana’s export prospects, particularly in the diamond sector, which previously accounted for $500 million in annual exports to the United States, its largest single diamond market.

The negotiations signal Botswana’s determination to strengthen bilateral trade relations, attract investment, and ensure sustainable growth for its key export industries. By securing improved tariffs and stronger partnerships, the country aims to expand market access and create more opportunities for economic development.
