Botswana and Namibia have signed a joint communique reaffirming their commitment to the successful implementation of the Trans-Kalahari Railway (TKR) Project. The signing took place on August 15 in Maun during a special Joint Ministerial Committee meeting.
Minister of Transport and Infrastructure, Mr Noah Salakae, and his Namibian counterpart, Mr Veikko Nekundi, representing the Ministry of Works and Transport, led the signing. The meeting focused on assessing progress under the bilateral agreement signed by the two governments in March 2014.
Both ministers expressed satisfaction with the achievements since the last committee meeting in Kasane. Key deliverables between May 23 and August 14 included the approval of the project inception report on June 30, the endorsement of a benchmarking exercise scheduled for September 2025, and submission of the needs assessment and solution options report.
The ministers also confirmed that the project remains on track and within budget, following the approved implementation roadmap. The joint communique underscores the continued collaboration between Botswana and Namibia to ensure the TKR Project advances regional trade, infrastructure development, and economic integration.
