The Botswana Ministry of Health, in collaboration with the government of South Africa, has issued an urgent recall of a specific batch of Nestlé Nan Special Pro HA 0-12 infant formula. The recall takes effect immediately following reports of contamination with cereulide, a toxin produced by the bacterium Bacillus cereus.
Authorities emphasized that cereulide contamination poses a serious health risk, particularly to infants, as it can cause food poisoning, vomiting, and in severe cases, organ damage. Parents and caregivers are urged to check the batch number on their products and immediately stop using any formula from the affected batch.
The recall applies specifically to the Special Pro HA 0-12 formula. The Botswana Ministry of Health is working closely with distributors and retailers to remove the affected products from shelves and ensure public safety. Health officials advise that any remaining stock be returned to the place of purchase or safely disposed of.
Bacillus cereus is known to survive in improperly handled or stored food. While routine quality controls generally prevent contamination, the recall highlights the importance of vigilance in infant nutrition. Parents are encouraged to monitor infants for symptoms such as persistent vomiting, diarrhea, or unusual lethargy and seek medical attention if any signs occur.
The Ministry of Health and relevant authorities continue to investigate the source of contamination and have reassured the public that additional safety measures are being implemented to prevent future occurrences.
This recall serves as a critical reminder for caregivers to always check product labels, storage instructions, and batch information, ensuring infant health and safety remain the top priority.
