Botswana’s Minister of Minerals and Energy, Honourable Bogolo Joy Kenewendo, and Zambia’s Acting Minister of Energy, Mr Elvis Nandu, have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) on Energy Cooperation. The agreement highlights both countries’ commitment to enhancing collaboration in energy transmission, crude oil and gas, petroleum products, non-renewable energy, and renewable energy.

The MOU aims to increase bilateral cooperation in developing initiatives, policies, and investments that support energy generation and trade between Botswana, Zambia, and the Southern African Power Pool. It provides a framework for joint efforts in power generation projects, urban and rural electrification, regional power pooling, crude oil and gas development, petroleum refining, storage and supply, renewable energy, and energy efficiency measures.

The agreement also promotes exchange of expertise between the two countries, facilitating knowledge transfer and strengthening capacity in the energy sector.

Signed during the Energy Forum for Africa Conference in Zambia, the MOU follows discussions between President Advocate Duma Gideon Boko of Botswana and President Hakainde Hichilema of Zambia during a state visit last month. Both Heads of State pledged to lead regional efforts to strengthen energy security, promote sustainable energy practices, and collaborate on climate change mitigation measures.

The partnership is expected to accelerate strategic energy projects, boost regional integration, and support sustainable growth in the Southern African region.
