The interim members of the Botswana Health Professions Council (BHPC) are participating in a two-day induction workshop aimed at equipping them with the knowledge and skills required to perform their duties effectively. The workshop covers key topics including Corporate Governance, Professionalism and Self-Regulation, the Botswana Health Professions Act, Data Protection, and Professional Conduct and Ethics.
The Minister of Health, Hon. Dr Stephen Modise, addressed the Council members during the opening session. He encouraged them to adopt a facilitative approach rather than a punitive one in executing their responsibilities. He further charged the interim Council to drive transformation within the BHPC and embrace digital tools to improve efficiency and accessibility.
The interim Council is expected to serve a six-month term. Its primary mandate includes registering practitioners across various health professions, recognizing the qualifications required for these professions, and maintaining custody of the relevant professional registers.
This induction workshop provides a foundation for the Council members to understand their roles, uphold professional standards, and ensure compliance with national regulations. By emphasizing professionalism, ethics, and governance, the BHPC aims to strengthen oversight of health professions in Botswana and support the delivery of safe and effective healthcare services nationwide.
