Assistant Minister for State President, Maipelo Mophuting, announced in Parliament that Botswana is moving forward with plans to establish a Sexual Offenders Registry. The initiative aligns with legislation passed in 2021 and aims to strengthen protections for vulnerable groups, especially women and children.

Minister Mophuting explained that the registry will serve as a centralized database accessible to law enforcement agencies, schools, and childcare institutions. This system will allow these entities to conduct background checks, ensuring that individuals with a history of sexual offenses can be identified and monitored.

The registry is part of a broader effort to enhance public safety and prevent sexual crimes. By providing a reliable tool for vetting potential employees and associates working with children and vulnerable adults, the initiative seeks to reduce risks in schools, childcare centres, and community programs.

Minister Mophuting emphasized the importance of the registry in protecting society’s most vulnerable members. She noted that its implementation will improve coordination between government agencies and ensure that convicted sexual offenders are closely monitored.

The establishment of the Sexual Offenders Registry represents a significant step in Botswana’s efforts to address sexual violence. It reflects the government’s commitment to safeguarding children and women while reinforcing accountability for offenders.
