The Botswana National Agriculture Show began yesterday at Sebele Grounds in Gaborone, running from August 18 to 24. The first day focused on animal inspections by judges as part of the competition.

Ms Hilda Motsipa, Acting Director of Animal Production at the Ministry of Lands and Agriculture, highlighted that the event will be officially opened by President Advocate Duma Boko on Friday. She said the show is held under the theme: Enhancing Agricultural Productivity Through Utilisation of Modern Technologies.

Ms Motsipa encouraged farmers to focus on developing value chains to increase the marketability of their products and strengthen the economy, which has historically relied heavily on minerals. She emphasized that integrating modern technology into agriculture can boost productivity and create sustainable growth.

President Boko recently raised concerns about the decline in the national herd and stressed the need for urgent interventions to protect livestock and support farmers. The agriculture show provides a platform for sharing knowledge, showcasing innovations, and addressing challenges facing Botswana’s farming sector.

The week-long event will include competitions, exhibitions, and demonstrations aimed at promoting best practices, improving productivity, and advancing the country’s agricultural industry. Farmers, stakeholders, and the public are expected to benefit from insights on modern farming techniques and sustainable development strategies.
