The Ministry of Sport and Arts announced plans to establish sports museums across Botswana. The initiative aims to document the achievements of local athletes while attracting tourism revenue.
Minister Jacob Kelebeng said the project is part of the government’s strategy to use sports tourism as a tool for economic diversification. He explained that the museums will function as historical archives and tourist attractions. Visitors will have the opportunity to explore Botswana’s sporting legacy while contributing to revenue through paid entry.
Kelebeng highlighted that Botswana has produced world-class athletes whose stories deserve preservation and recognition. The museums will celebrate these achievements and inspire young people to pursue sports. He added that the initiative will also foster national pride and encourage community engagement in sporting activities.
The planned museums are expected to feature exhibits on notable athletes, historic competitions, and interactive displays. They will serve as educational resources for schools and sports institutions while offering a platform for local talent to gain visibility.
Officials said the project is still in the planning stage, with locations and designs yet to be finalized. The government intends to collaborate with sports federations, local communities, and private partners to ensure the museums reflect Botswana’s diverse sporting culture.
By combining heritage preservation with tourism, Botswana aims to create sustainable income streams and strengthen its identity as a nation that values sports and achievement.
