The Botswana Police Service (BPS) has successfully concluded a five-day Gender Mainstreaming Workshop aimed at promoting gender sensitivity and inclusivity within the organization. Held at the Botswana Police College in Otse, the workshop, organized through the Gender and Child Protection Branch, ended today (07/02/2025) and brought together senior officers from across the country.

The workshop sought to enhance participants’ understanding of gender-responsive concepts and equip them with tools to create equitable and inclusive work environments. In his keynote address, Senior Assistant Commissioner of Police, Israel Tuelo, underscored the transformative potential of gender mainstreaming.

“Gender mainstreaming can significantly reshape leadership, decision-making, and organizational development. As agents of change, senior officers are uniquely positioned to influence policies, practices, and workplace culture,” Mr. Tuelo said. He urged participants to apply their newly acquired knowledge to address gender-related gaps within their stations and foster positive change across the BPS.

Superintendent Anastacia Mogale, Station Commander of Orapa Police Station, praised the workshop for providing valuable insights into decision-making, particularly on gender issues. She called on her colleagues to extend the knowledge gained to their teams and contribute to a more inclusive police force.

The workshop aligns with BPS’s broader commitment to gender equality and its efforts to ensure that policies and practices within the organization reflect these values. By empowering senior officers with gender-responsive skills, the initiative is expected to influence not only internal operations but also the service delivery to communities.

Participants left the workshop inspired and equipped to champion gender equality within their roles, signaling a promising step forward for the Botswana Police Service in its mission to create a more inclusive and equitable organization.
