Minister of Sport and Arts, Jacob Kelebeng, has confirmed that the appointment of a substantive Chief Executive Officer (CEO) for the Botswana National Sports Commission (BNSC) will be finalized soon. The announcement comes after a prolonged recruitment process that began in May 2025, following the expiration of former CEO Tuelo Serufho’s contract.

Since Serufho’s departure, Makuke Makuke has served as interim CEO. His initial six-month contract was extended while the search for a permanent appointee continued. Minister Kelebeng stated, “The appointment will be made anytime, either in December or January, and let the process unfold itself. What I know is that the process is on, as to who will be appointed, we will know when it is complete.”

The BNSC has faced heightened public attention over the recruitment process, as stakeholders and the sports community have been awaiting clarity on the leadership of the commission. The appointment of a substantive CEO is expected to provide stability and strengthen strategic planning for sports development across the country.

BNSC Board Chairperson, Marumo Morule, highlighted that the CEO’s appointment is guided by the BNSC Act. He emphasized that the minister makes the final decision in consultation with the board, ensuring the process adheres to legal and governance frameworks.

The new CEO will play a key role in implementing national sports policies, promoting athlete development, and enhancing Botswana’s presence in regional and international sporting events. The appointment is anticipated to bring renewed focus on programs that support grassroots sports, talent identification, and the professional management of national sporting bodies.

The final selection is expected to conclude by the end of December or early January 2026, marking a critical step toward strengthening the leadership and governance of Botswana’s sports sector.
