Botswana’s tourism sector is poised for significant growth, with Minister of Environment and Tourism Wynter Mmolotsi outlining plans to double employment in the industry. The move comes as the government aims to expand offerings and attract a wider range of visitors.

Currently, the tourism sector employs over 58,000 people, contributing significantly to the national economy. Mmolotsi emphasized that growth will focus on diversifying beyond traditional wildlife tourism, exploring new experiences and attractions to meet evolving visitor demands.

Addressing a special session of the Francistown City Council (FCC) last week, the minister highlighted that government initiatives are designed to create more jobs while enhancing Botswana’s appeal as a tourism destination. He expressed confidence that, with the planned developments, employment in the sector could double in the coming years.

The strategy includes expanding eco-tourism, cultural tourism, and adventure experiences, alongside improving infrastructure and services for both domestic and international visitors. By broadening the tourism portfolio, Botswana seeks to attract a more diverse visitor base and increase revenue opportunities.

Officials say that doubling employment will not only support economic growth but also provide more opportunities for local communities to benefit directly from tourism. Training and skills development programs are expected to accompany sector expansion, ensuring that employees can meet the demands of a modernized industry.

With these developments, Botswana is positioning itself as a competitive and inclusive tourism hub in Southern Africa, aiming to strengthen its global reputation while creating sustainable employment opportunities for citizens.
