Commission on Constitution review submits report

President Dr Mokgweetsi Masisi this morning received the report on constitution review following the conclusion of the assignment by the Presidential Commission of inquiry into the review of the Constitution of Botswana.

President Masisi commended the members of the commission for their commitment, dedication and selfless-service to the nation. He said the assignment and work is historic as the reviewed constitution will be a result of ideas and wishes of all citizens juxtapose the current constitution.

He said the idea of reviewing the constitution is to ensure a united, peaceful and progressive country as the nation looks to realizing the ideals of vision 2036.

President Dr Masisi said government will in consultation with professionals consider the report and make way forward.

The presidential Commission of enquiry was appointed in 2021, with responsibility to ascertain from the people of Botswana, their views on the operation of the Constitution and, in particular, the strengths and weaknesses of the Constitution; assess the adequacy of the Constitution, articulate the concerns of the people of Botswana as regards the amendments that may be required for a review of the Constitution, conduct inquiries and obtain information from sources that the Commission considers relevant in the execution of its mandate and to make any recommendations on the review or amendment of the Constitution.

Meanwhile Chairperson of the Commission Former Chief Justice Maruping Dibotelo, revealed that they held consultative meetings in all the 57 constituencies and addressed 132 Kgotla meetings and 158 meetings with interest groups. He said citizens across the nation made their contributions while others made their submitting through postal and emails, all of which enabled them to achieve the assignment on time.
