Gaborone University College of Law and Professional Studies (GUC) has officially launched its fully accredited School of Nursing, marking a significant milestone in Botswana’s healthcare education sector. The launch signals the institution’s dedication to producing well-trained health professionals who will contribute meaningfully to the national health system.

Speaking during the launch, GUC Board Chair Prof. B. Moswela confirmed that the newly introduced nursing programmes have received full approval from the Nursing and Midwifery Council of Botswana. He also highlighted the institution’s investment in high-quality learning facilities, including fully equipped Physics, Biology, and Chemistry laboratories tailored to meet the practical training needs of nursing students.

GUC Managing Director Prof. PJ Antoney emphasized the importance of industry partnerships, revealing that the university has established collaborations with key stakeholders such as Sidilega Private Hospital, Gaborone Private Hospital, and the Ministry of Health. These partnerships will provide students with access to valuable internships and attachments, bridging the gap between academic learning and real-world clinical experience.

Head of Department for GUC Nursing, One Kebiditswe, outlined the two flagship programmes offered under the School of Nursing: the Bachelor of Science in Nursing (Degree) and the Certificate in Healthcare Assistant. Both programmes are fully accredited by the Botswana Qualifications Authority (BQA), ensuring they meet national standards for healthcare training and competency.

The official launch of the School of Nursing was presided over by Assistant Minister of Health, Lawrence Ookeditse, who commended GUC for contributing to the growth of Botswana’s human capital in the health sector. He noted that the programmes will be administered by qualified health personnel, all of whom hold at least a Master’s degree, guaranteeing high academic and professional standards.

With the introduction of these nursing programmes, GUC continues to position itself as a leading institution in professional and academic training, now extending its impact to the critical field of healthcare.
