The Ipelegeng program is set for a major transformation, with workers expected to benefit from a P2 500 monthly salary increase and a broader range of responsibilities. Minister of Local Government and Traditional Affairs, Ketlhalefile Motshegwa, announced that the program will evolve into a Public Works Program designed to deliver a wider scope of community development projects.

Currently, Ipelegeng workers primarily focus on debushing, litter collection, and general environmental hygiene. Under the new structure, their duties will expand to include construction works, infrastructure repairs, and ongoing maintenance of public facilities. This includes essential upkeep in government schools, such as repairing broken furniture, fixing doors and windows, painting buildings, and maintaining school grounds.

Minister Motshegwa explained that the change is part of the government’s strategy to improve public infrastructure while creating more value from community employment programs. The additional responsibilities will also expose workers to new skills in construction, carpentry, plumbing, and basic electrical work. This practical training is expected to improve their employability beyond the program.

The salary adjustment is aimed at recognizing the increased workload and the higher skill levels required for the expanded duties. According to the Minister, the government views the shift as an investment in both human capital and national infrastructure.

The Public Works Program will be rolled out in phases to ensure workers receive the necessary training and resources to meet the new job requirements. By aligning Ipelegeng’s work with national development priorities, authorities aim to deliver better services to communities while fostering economic participation through skilled labor.
