The Minister of Minerals and Energy, Honourable Bogolo Kenewendo, met with workers of Masama Coal Mine in Lentsweletau today to address concerns over four months of unpaid wages. The mine, operated by Minergy, has been facing financial challenges that left employees without salaries, raising serious concerns about their welfare and that of their families.

Kenewendo confirmed that the Government has intervened to resolve the matter. She explained that the decision was driven by the need to protect the livelihoods of Batswana who depend on the mining sector for income. Unpaid wages, she noted, directly affect household stability, food security, and community well-being.

To make the payments possible, the Ministry worked through the Minerals Development Company Botswana (MDCB). Minergy had previously received a loan facility from MDCB, and the Government has now converted part of Minergy’s debt into funds that will be used to settle the workers’ arrears. This move ensures that employees are not left to bear the consequences of the company’s financial struggles.

The Minister assured miners that the four months of outstanding wages will be paid by next week. Addressing concerns about transparency, Kenewendo announced that the payments will be disbursed through a trust fund. This mechanism is intended to guarantee accountability and ensure that all affected workers receive what is due to them without interference or mismanagement.

The engagement highlighted the Government’s stance on safeguarding worker rights and maintaining stability in the mining sector, which remains a key contributor to Botswana’s economy. For the employees of Masama Coal Mine, the commitment provides relief after months of uncertainty and financial hardship.
