During a recent public questions and answers session, Botswana’s Minister of Local Government and Traditional Affairs, Ketlhalefile FC Motshegwa, delivered a candid message about the need for leadership change within the Ministry and its Councils. Minister Motshegwa revealed that some of the current top managers are not aligned with the Ministry’s vision, and stressed that they must make way for more competent individuals who demonstrate proven merit.

Highlighting the Ministry’s culture of merit-based recruitment and promotion, the Minister emphasized that leadership appointments must reflect competence and effectiveness to support the country’s broader goals. He expressed the urgent need for renewal across the public service sector, aligning it fully with the vision of Botswana’s new Government and the country’s ambitions for substantial national transformation.

“To achieve meaningful progress,” Minister Motshegwa explained, “Botswana requires transformational and thought leaders who can drive change and innovation.” He noted that the future direction demands agility and efficiency, urging public servants to reduce bureaucratic red tape that slows decision-making and project implementation.

Minister Motshegwa also reiterated the importance of intensifying efforts to combat corruption at all levels. Transparency and accountability, he said, are critical to restoring public trust and ensuring that government resources are used effectively.

The Ministry of Local Government and Traditional Affairs, alongside the Councils, is mandated to deliver quality and durable projects that meet the expectations of citizens. Minister Motshegwa underscored the duty to ensure projects are completed on time and within budget, aligning public service delivery with national development objectives.

This frank assessment signals a commitment to transforming Botswana’s public sector by fostering leadership that is capable, accountable, and aligned with the country’s evolving needs. The Minister’s call to action sets a clear mandate for institutional renewal that prioritizes performance and integrity in public administration.
