After completing the World Athletics Level One coaching course in Zimbabwe, Nijel Amos has been appointed as the middle distance coach for the Iran national athletics team. The move forms part of his retirement plan from competitive athletics and marks a new chapter in his sporting career.
Amos revealed that his appointment followed the acquisition of his World Athletics coaching certificate. He expressed gratitude for the opportunity to share his expertise, guide athletes, and make an impact beyond his own competitive achievements. “Sport has always been my passion, and now I get to help shape the next generation of champions and contribute to the development of Iranian athletics,” said the 2012 Olympic silver medalist.
Addressing concerns about potential language barriers, Amos confirmed that most of his athletes understand English. He also noted that they attend English classes, which facilitates smoother communication during training and coaching sessions.
While he did not disclose the exact terms of his contract, Amos indicated his intention to be based in Iran for the long term. He emphasized his focus on mentoring athletes, improving performance, and contributing to the growth of middle distance running in the country.
Amos’ transition from an elite athlete to an international coach highlights a growing trend of former competitors applying their experience to develop talent and strengthen athletics programs globally. His appointment is expected to boost Iran’s middle distance running prospects and inspire upcoming athletes in the region.
