President Advocate Duma Boko has officially launched the Botswana Economic Transformation Program (BETP), a bold and ambitious national initiative designed to jumpstart Botswana’s sluggish economy and tackle rising unemployment rates. The program marks a pivotal moment in Botswana’s economic history as the country seeks to move away from its long-standing dependence on diamond mining towards a more diversified and resilient economic future.
During the launch event, President Boko acknowledged the challenges facing Botswana’s economy, citing the over-reliance on diamond revenues and persistent poverty as key obstacles. Describing the current situation as “a national inflection point,” he emphasized the urgent need for sweeping reforms to create a vibrant, sustainable economy that works for all citizens.
President Boko outlined a clear four-point agenda aimed at steering Botswana towards a services-led economy. This includes diversifying beyond diamonds by expanding sectors such as finance, technology, tourism, and professional services; establishing Botswana as a regional financial hub by capitalizing on its political stability and strategic location; leveraging political stability to build investor confidence through transparent governance and strong regulatory frameworks; and delivering sustainable and inclusive growth to ensure economic benefits reach every citizen, village, and town.
“Our transformation will not be slow – we will sprint,” President Boko declared, drawing inspiration from global success stories like Dubai and Singapore that rapidly transformed their economies through visionary leadership and strategic investments.
A key feature of BETP is the creation of Economic Transformation Labs—specialized units tasked with fast-tracking investment opportunities, dismantling bureaucratic red tape, and fostering innovation. These labs provide a dynamic platform where public and private sectors collaborate to identify and scale economic opportunities quickly. To ensure effective implementation, Botswana has partnered with Phemandu Associates, a globally recognized transformation consultancy firm already actively working on the ground to guide and support the program’s rollout.
To maintain momentum and guarantee results, the government will monitor progress through a Presidential Delivery Dashboard. This real-time monitoring system tracks key performance indicators across all ministries, enhancing transparency and holding government officials accountable to the citizens they serve.
“This is not a plan for the privileged few. It’s for every citizen, every village, every town,” President Boko reiterated, underscoring the program’s inclusive vision aimed at uplifting all sectors of Botswana’s society.
The launch of the Botswana Economic Transformation Program signals a new chapter of hope and opportunity for the nation. With strong leadership, clear goals, and innovative implementation strategies, Botswana aims to sprint toward a prosperous future that uplifts every citizen.
