Speaking at the Heads of State Roundtable in Cape Town, President Boko reaffirmed Botswana’s commitment to achieving universal access to sustainable water and sanitation services. He stressed that water security is central to the country’s development goals and directly linked to social and economic progress.

Botswana’s semi-arid climate makes it vulnerable to persistent water shortages. Climate change has intensified these challenges through prolonged droughts and irregular rainfall patterns. President Boko noted that these obstacles present an opportunity for strategic investment in infrastructure, enabling the country to build systems that can withstand future pressures.

The President outlined Botswana’s plans to expand water treatment plants, construct additional storage facilities, lay new pipelines, and enhance wastewater reclamation systems. These projects aim to increase access, improve quality, and ensure long-term sustainability of water resources.

President Boko called on African nations and global partners to work together in advancing Sustainable Development Goal 6, which focuses on clean water and sanitation. He emphasized that cooperation is key to building resilience, sharing technology, and mobilizing funding for large-scale projects.

Water security forms a central pillar of Botswana Vision 2036 and the Botswana Economic Transformation Programme (BETP). The President explained that securing reliable water supplies will drive industrial growth, agricultural productivity, and urban development, unlocking the country’s economic potential.

In his closing remarks, President Boko delivered a clear message: “Water is life, and without it there is no development. Together, we can ensure Africa has the water it needs to thrive.” His statement underscored the urgency for coordinated action across Africa to safeguard water resources and support inclusive growth.
