President Duma Boko has called for peace and harmony as Botswana marks 59 years of independence. Speaking in his first independence message as President, Boko emphasized the role of daily acts of unity in fostering national healing.
He highlighted courage and composure, citing world athletics 4×4 and Olympic gold medallist Tebogo Letsile. “I encourage all of you Batswana, to increase peace and harmony in our homes, to be healing weaknesses in the lives of others every day. Take the other cheek if necessary. When Letsile was temporarily suspended for a wrong start, the 22-year-old, wise and courageous beyond his years, did not complain or cause anyone any trouble,” Boko said.
The President challenged citizens to continue promoting peace and stability over the next 59 years. “Let us continue to succeed many times beyond the low standards that others have expected of us, let us continue to develop our talents and abilities and speak so loudly that the whole world will fail to ignore our voice,” he added.
Boko also addressed the unprecedented challenge of Government being unable to fully provide for the independence festivities. He revealed that private businesses had contributed approximately P2 billion worth of food to support celebrations across districts.
The President’s message underscores the importance of unity, resilience, and civic responsibility as Botswana reflects on its independence journey and looks toward the future.
