SADC Executive Secretary Holds Key Meeting with EU Special Representative on Great Lakes Region

The Executive Secretary of SADC, H.E. Mr. Elias Magosi, held a courtesy meeting with the European Union Special Representative (EUSR) for the Great Lakes Region, H.E. Mr. Johan Borgstam, at the SADC Secretariat Headquarters in Gaborone, Botswana on 06 October 2025. The EUSR was accompanied by H.E. Ms. Petra Pereyra, Ambassador of the European Union to the Republic of Botswana and SADC, and Head of the EU Delegation.

The meeting focused on peace, security, and stability in the Great Lakes Region, with particular attention on the ongoing conflict in eastern Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC). Both parties expressed concern over the humanitarian crisis affecting communities and emphasized the urgent need for enhanced cooperation and mobilisation of resources. They highlighted the importance of securing humanitarian corridors to ensure safe access for aid to affected citizens.

H.E. Mr. Magosi briefed the EUSR on the SADC–East African Community (EAC) collaborative process designed to restore peace and stability in the DRC. He noted that the initiative has transitioned under the leadership of the African Union, reflecting a continental approach aimed at achieving a sustainable and inclusive resolution to the conflict.

Both sides reaffirmed their commitment to continued dialogue and partnership between SADC and the European Union. They emphasized the importance of joint efforts in promoting peace, security, and development across the Great Lakes Region and the wider African continent.

The meeting underscores the ongoing collaboration between regional and international actors to address conflict, support humanitarian interventions, and strengthen stability in one of Africa’s most complex conflict zones.
